The Mingei or folk crafts movement in Japan was led by the philosopher and critic Yanagi Soetsu. It was officially established in 1926, during the time of rapid cultural change in Japan, including westernization, industrialization, and urban growth. Mingei philosophy represented the need to preserve and assert national Japanese identity and tradition by promoting hand-crafted art of ordinary people. Mengei focuses on minimalism and simplicity of form and color. It promotes the idea that humble, utilitarian and functional goods are inherently beautiful.
