Antique engraving by the profound Italian painter and engraver Luca Carlevarijs, circa 1703. The artwork features Venice and is titled 'Altra Veduta della chiesa della Salute.' View of the Grand Canal with the Punta della Dogana, and the church of Santa Maria della Salute to the right. The title is indicated on the lower margin and signed on the right 'Luca Carlevarijs del. et inc'. Matted and framed in wood under glass. Luca Carlevarijs (1663–1730) was the first of the so-called 'Venetian view' painters. He had settled in Venice from his native Udine by 1679. Until Canaletto came to prominence in the 1720s, Carlevarijs was the most successful vedutista (landscape painters) in Venice. In 1703, he published a series of 104 engravings of Venetian views. The offered engraving was created as a part of this series. His work focused primarily on the main stretch of the city around the Bacino di San Marco, the Piazzetta, as seen in the present work, and the Piazza San Marco. Carlevarijs is considered the pioneer of the genre of the cityscapes (vedute) of Venice and had a big influence on artists who came after him.
