Edmund Hort New (1871 – 1931) was an English artist, member of the Birmingham Group and leading illustrator of his day. He became widely known in the 1890s as an illustrator in the black-and-white style of the Arts and Crafts movement. New specialized in pen and ink drawings of rural and urban landscapes, old buildings, interiors, architectural features, and also designed bookplates. Between 1896 and 1914, New created hundreds of illustrations for over 50 books for various publishers. In 1905, the artist moved to Oxford where he worked on a series of drawings of the University of Oxford colleges, a project which was to occupy him for the rest of his life. Dr. Henry Gillett, to whom the offered drawing is dedicated, was a medical doctor who served as Mayor of Oxford in the late 1930s. He is particularly known for establishing The Oxford Refugee Committee and for his involvement with refugees escaping Nazi Germany.
